ABOUT HÜX´L XL



The Group HÜX´L XL deals with paintig, performance, video-, light- and room installation. For some time now the collective, consisting of three artists Katrin Leitner, Walter Peter (Kassel) und Bernhard Hümmer (Hamburg), deals with the subject "Laboratory". That way an exhibition room of the gallery studio 44 in Genova was completely turned into a futuristic, interactive laboratory, where actions involving the public took place. A subject of examination during their opening performance was the Bavarian dumpling widely known by the Italians, which HÜX´L XL had blended with some local materials and food. A piece of homely research away from home.


ÜBER HÜX`L XL

Die Gruppe HÜX`L XL befasst sich mit Malerei, Performance, Video-, Licht- und Rauminstallation. Seit einiger Zeit beschäftigt sich das Kollektiv, bestehend aus den drei Künstlern Katrin Leitner, Walter Peter (Kassel) und Bernhard Hümmer (Hamburg), unter anderem mit dem Thema "Labor". Dabei wurde zum Beispiel ein Ausstellungsraum der Galleria Studio 44 in Genua komplett in ein futuristisches, interaktives Labor umgebaut, in dem Aktionen unter Einbeziehung des Publikums stattfanden. Ein Untersuchungsgegenstand bei ihrer Eröffnungs-Performance war der bei den Italienern weitgehend unbekannte fränkische Knödel, den HÜXL´XL vorher mit einigen vor Ort gefundenen Gegenständen und Speisen verschmolzen hatte. Ein Stück Heimatforschung in der Fremde.

HÜX´L XL: LAB - PHASES

HÜX´L XL are known for their poetic laboratory intallations as seen in Dublin (Driaocht Arts Centre 2006), Hamburg (S.K.A.M. 2005, Ding Dong! 2006) and Genova (Galleria Studio 44, 2005). Here the three artists created by means of waste material, plastic bottles and hose pipes several romantic experimental structures, illuminated by diodes and fluorescent liquids. Within the installations performances take place whereby HÜX´L XL produces itself as research team. Self-made tools, pseudo scientific instruments, which serve to transport substances due for analysing in Petri dishes and test tubes. The research scientist`s identity is deliberately boldly stressed by means of protective clothing, glasses, gloves and identity code. Participation is part of the production. Visitors to the exhibition are consciously integrated into the research process. Children in particular enjoy taking part in the fantasy experiment. Research is not dealt with as a serious and germ free discipline. The research scientists and their assistants much rather stroll through the bubbling colourful world of laboratories, crawl through secret tunnels, froth up strawberry pink liquids with straws and occasionally catch a runaway psycho plasma pig. A further level reveals the following: When HÜX´L XL concentrates on their experiments during the production, looks through magnifiying glasses or carefully roams through the "pile of tissues", the point of the object is not really the actual result. It is the gesture of research, namely to show how scientists and science are presented to the public by the media.

HÜX`L XL: LABOR PHASEN

HÜXL´XL sind bekannt für ihre poetischen Laborinstallationen, die bereits in Dublin (Driaocht Arts Centre 2006),Hamburg (SKAM 2005, Ding Dong 2006) und Genua (Galleria Studio 44, 2005) zu sehen waren. Hier schufen die drei Künstler aus diversen Wegwerf-Materialien, Plastikflaschen und Schläuchen romantische Versuchsaufbauten, die mit Hilfe von Leuchtdioden und fluoreszierenden Flüssigkeiten illuminiert wurden. In den Installationen finden Performances statt, in denen sich HÜX´L XL als Forscherteam inszeniert. Eine wichtige Rolle spielen dabei selbstgebaute TOOLS, pseudo-wissenschaftliche Instrumente, mit deren Hilfe zu untersuchende Substanzen in Petrischalen und Reagenzgläsern bewegt und transportiert werden. Die Forscher-Identität wird gewollt plakativ durch Schutzkleidung, Brille, Handschuhe und Zugangsausweis unterstrichen. Partizipation ist Teil der Inszenierung. Ausstellungsbesucher werden als Laborassistenten bewusst in den laufenden Forschungsprozess integriert. Besonders gerne beteiligen sich Kinder an den Phantasie-Experimenten. Forschung wird von HÜX´L XL nicht als ernste und keimfreie Disziplin behandelt. Viel eher lustwandeln die Forscher und ihre Gehilfen in der blubbernd-bunten Labor-Welt, kriechen mal hier durch Geheimtunnel, schäumen mal dort erdbeerrote Flüssigkeiten mit Strohalmen auf und fangen zwischendurch auch mal ein entflohenes Psychoplasmaschwein ein. Ein weitere Ebene offenbart dies: Wenn HÜX´L XL sich während ihren Inszenierungen konzentriert über ihre Experiment beugen, durch große Lupen schauen oder vorsichtig „Zellhaufen“ pipettieren, geht es hier nicht um tatsächlichen Erkenntnisgewinn. Es geht um die Geste des Forschens, darum, wie Wissenschaftler und die Wissenschaft in der Öffentlichkeit durch Medien inszeniert werden.
